The unlockable playable character Julius Belmont is able to use Sub-Weapons in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, while the main protagonist Soma Cruz is able to use Bullet Souls instead, which he gains by stealing monster's souls and behave like Sub-Weapons. Both of these are fueled by Magic Points instead of Hearts though, although Hearts acquired are also used to replenish the MP Gauge. Instead of starting out at a predetermined level like the standard Heart count, the MP Gauge starts out completely filled at the beginning of the game or from a save room, like the HP Gauge. MP is recovered gradually over time for Soma and also are completely refilled after defeating a boss and obtaining a Magic Crystal.

While Soma does not have access to traditional sub-weapons, some of the abilities he gains from monsters can be used in similar ways.
- Dagger - Evil Butcher's Knife Throw (Throw sharpened butcher knives), Durga's Penetrator (Throws katanas), Ripper's Scalpel Throw (Stabs enemies with a blood soaked knife), and Harpy's Wing Cutter (Shoots out razor-like feathers)
- Axe - Skeleton's Bone Throw (Throw bones), Giant Skeleton's Big Skull (Throws giant skulls), and Mud Man's Mud Ball (Slings mud at enemies)
- Holy Water - Werewolf's Energy Guyser (Creates a mountain of magical fire), Une's Nature Mine (Buries land mines throughout its turf), Biphron's Napalm Flare (Shoots out a series of exploding fireballs)
- Cross - Axe Armor's Spinning Edge (Throws axes at enemies)
- Stopwatch - Chronomage's Time Stop (Ability to stop time)
Some of his abilities can also mimic other sub-weapons found in earlier games, including some of Maria Renard's.
- Rebound Stone - Slime's Bound Slime (Hurls slimeballs at enemies)
- Cat - Student Witch's Cat's Run (Release a lethal cat that runs full speed at enemies)
- Hymn - Siren's Devil's Lullaby (Song casts a spell upon enemies)
He also has access to a plethora of other Bullet Souls with abilities that mimic other powers seen in previous Castlevania games, as well as some unique ones.
Julius Belmont[]
The unlockable character Julius Belmont is able to use traditional sub-weapons (Crucifix, Holy Water, and Axe), as well as one Item Crash (Grand Cross), which he starts with and can switch to at any time. Julius is missing the standard Dagger and Stopwatch sub-weapons. Julius' MP does not refill automatically over time, placing more emphasis on the acquisition of hearts to fuel sub-weapons.
