Submerged Areas appear in some Castlevania games in which the game is more exploration-based, such as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Symphony of the Night and Order of Ecclesia. They are almost always connected to underground waterways and oftentimes a special item is required to access these hard to reach areas, mostly due to the fact characters tend to float and cannot initially breathe underwater.

In Alucard's case (being part vampire), he actually takes damage from even touching water and thus requires several items before he can reach these areas.

Typical enemies are what one would expect underwater, mostly fishes, Mermen, and the occasional water demon. Because they are naturally mostly unexplored areas, they tend to have excellent items, some of which even have sunken ships as sub-areas.

Some of these areas are initially not submerged underwater, but at some point will start to flood at an alarming rate, whether it is caused by a powerful enemy or after fighting one, or by an action made by the player. The player is then urged to make haste in traversing these sections as quickly as possible to find safety on higher ground, lest the water level manages to outrace them and they end up in a watery grave.
