Development history[]
Cylindrical tower[]
One idea that was experimented with in the game development process was a tall cylindrical tower, which would be spiraled up as the backgrounds scrolled. A concept design document for this tower was included in The History of Castlevania: Book of the Crescent Moon. An experimental version of this tower was included in a prototype build. It could be reached by falling below the draw bridge in Stage 1 and was dubbed stage A-1. The stage that was later designated A-1 was labeled A-2 in this prototype.
Given the method of reaching block A in the prototype, it is possible that at one point, the cylindrical tower and clock tower were intended to be reached using an alternate path early in the game (similar to the branching path taken to the first clock tower in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse). The concept art shows Dracula's Castle being far in the background as seen from the cylindrical tower. It may explain why unlike other games, Dracula's throne room was not attached to the Clock Tower.
