Flamberge Icon

The Flamberge is a flame edged sword. When used by the Flying Armor in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (called a Cloaked Knight) or Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, it can move on its and occasionally spins around and gets sent out towards its opponent (similar to a Bloody Sword in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon or a Type B Knife).

Alucard can obtain the Flamberge from the Cloaked Knight as a drop item in Symphony of the Night and can also obtain it in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Its menu icon looks identical to the sword that the Flying Armor uses. However, when used by Alucard, it appears as a two-handed Great Sword and has a similar Dash Thrust ability (activated by pressing ←→ + [Attack]) that the weaker Claymore has. The Flying Armor also drops a Heaven's Sword in Symphony of the Night and Portrait of Ruin, which behaves more similar to the way the Flamberge does when the Flying Armor uses it, in that it is thrown and then returns, but lacks its flame edge.

The boss version of the Flying Armor does not use a Flamberge in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Instead, it appears to use two Claymores (one of which Soma Cruz acquires after defeating it), which was similar to the Flamberge in Symphony of the Night when used by Alucard, but without the flame edge. The fact that the armor uses two swords could be a nod to the two different types of swords it can drop in Symphony of the Night.

It's possible that the dual flame edged blade that the Paladin Roland de Ronceval wields in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 was inspired by the Flamberge, while the similar blade that Pan wields as the Silver Knight in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow represents the Heaven's Sword. Both are dual blades that when joined together can be thrown out at opponents and then return.

Despite its description, the Flamberge does not deal out Fire damage in the games it appears in. In Symphony of the Night, it is usually outclassed by the Sword of Dawn or the Zwei Hander.
