"The Rival" is a canceled character from an unknown Castlevania game. From the original description, it is implied that –contrary to Richter and Maria's sprites– he wasn't a character from the canceled Sega 32X Castlevania game known in fan circles as "Castlevania: The Bloodletting", but possibly a canceled character from Rondo of Blood.[1]

Trivia[]
- In a Nintendo Power preview article for Castlevania: Dracula X, references are made to a friend of Richter Belmont called Josef. As Josef doesn't make an appearance in the actual game, it appears he was cut. It is possible that he and "the Rival" are one and the same.[2]
