- For the body armor sometimes labeled as "Chest", see Chest Gear.
The Treasure Chest (宝箱 Takarabako?), also known as Treasure Box, Item Box, or simply as Chest, is a recurring item container featured in the Castlevania series. They usually contain gold or various types of items (some of which are very rare).
Game specific information[]
Castlevania[]
Some treasure chests are hidden within the chambers of Dracula's Castle. They are collected on touch and each is worth 2,000 points. Similar to other hidden treasures found in the game, to make a chest appear Simon Belmont has to stand in one particular spot for five seconds.
Vampire Killer[]
In Vampire Killer, treasure chests contain various types of items. A Yellow Key is required to open them.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]
An unused, flashing treasure chest exists within the game's coding among the other money objects, but it isn't found anywhere in the game. It is fully functional and will give the player $5,000 in gold if collected, which is worth more than any other item in the game. The reason why it wasn't included in the game is unknown. It can only be added in through a cheating device and then slashing certain candles to make it appear.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow[]
Treasure chests can be found in some rooms. Instead of opening by their lids, they must be destroyed this time around to reveal their contents, acting similarly to candles in this regard. When destroyed, a treasure chest will drop a large amount of Gold coins of all denominations.
There is a unique chest near the end of the Forbidden Area that contains a horde of Rippers instead of gold. Due to how easy it is to kill all the gathered Rippers right after destroying it, this chest is particularly effective for quickly leveling up the player character.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]
Treasure chests function just like they did in Aria of Sorrow, requiring to destroy them in order to reveal their contents in Gold coins.
This game also features the return of the Mimic enemy introduced in Aria of Sorrow, although instead of a money bag this time the monster poses as an innocent-looking stationary Treasure Chest to lure unsuspecting victims. If the player attempts to destroy this "chest", the Mimic will suddenly grow a pair of legs and start jumping around while chomping with its fangs-filled lid.
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness[]
All chests in Curse of Darkness are initially locked with a magic seal. Only Fairy-Type Innocent Devils are able to open them via their innate Unlock ability, so it's a good idea to always carry one in Hector's deck.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia[]
Different types of treasure chests can be found hidden in almost every location of the game. There are five different types:
- Wooden Chest
- The most common type of chest. They respawn when re-entering an area. There is a 10% chance of it being replaced by a rare green chest.
- There are three unique wooden chests in Wygol Village, one at the end of each wing of the town and a third one inside Irina's house. They have a random drop of either a Meat, a Milk, or a Coffee. Instead of respawning when Shanoa enters the stage, these particular chests will only do so every time a boss is defeated, and they are never replaced by a green chest, even if Shanoa wears a Treasure Hat. If the player defeats a boss before picking up the items in the chests spawned from the previous one, those items will be lost.
- The chests in the Training Hall and Large Cavern also behave differently. Although they normally respawn when Shanoa enters the stage, their quality is fixed, meaning that wearing the Treasure Hat will not affect the chance of wooden chests being replaced by green (rare) chests. Instead, these stages offer a single, guaranteed green chest at the end of their paths.
- Green Chest
- A rare type of chest that will occasionally replace a wooden chest, except in Wygol Village, Training Hall and Large Cavern. There is a 10% chance for a chest to be replaced, but it can be increased if Shanoa wears the Treasure Hat when entering the stage.
- Blue Chest
- A type of chest that is normally hidden from view, yet they can be easily located if Shanoa is wearing the Dowsing Hat. One must crouch down (or slide) in order for it to appear (the chest will rise from the ground if done correctly).
- If the player falls from a great height, the character automatically crouches upon landing, possibly revealing a hidden chest. This often occurs unintentionally at the waterfall in Tristis Pass.
- Additionally, a blue chest containing a Boss Medal will appear whenever a boss is defeated without taking damage (each boss in the game has one). Whether it was opened or not, each of these chests will reappear in the room where its respective boss was defeated for the rest of the game.
- Red Chest
- A unique type of chest. Each contains a fixed drop, which can vary from unique equipment, HP Max Up, MP Max Up or Heart Max Up items, an usable item, or even a Quest item. They remain open in place once the item has been taken and won't get refilled when reentering an area.
- These are the only chests to be found in Albus Mode, and can only contain one of the three upgrades: HP Max Up, MP Max Up, or Heart Max Up items. However, these chests respawn in the subsequent playthroughs in New Game Plus mode, allowing the player to further maximize the HP, MP and Heart meters without losing the upgrades received on the previous playthroughs.
- Golden Chest
- An incredibly rare chest that contains a rare Relic, sometimes required for further progression through the game. There are only four of them to be found in the entire game, and the location of the one containing the Glyph Sleeve changes from Minera Prison Island to Ecclesia in Hard Mode.
- Mimic (fake Wooden Chest)
- The Mimic is an enemy that conceals itself taking the appearance of a wooden chest. If the player attempts to open it, the monster will reveal itself and attack. It contains no items and the Mimic itself also drops none. The Mimic cannot be damaged before opening the chest, so it is impossible to know it is one without prior knowledge of their spawn locations, but is still a source of Experience and Attribute Points when defeated.
