Tyrfing is a one-handed Dark elemental sword in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Characteristics[]
Tyrfing is the first Dark elemental sword encountered. However, it appears to be utterly useless, as it actually subtracts 30 points from Alucard's ATT. If the total ATT value is zero or negative (which is effectively the same as having 0 ATT), its attack will deal no damage and the sword will pass right through the enemy (but it can still stop projectiles and break candles). It also suffers from a low swing rate, being slow to swing continuously and leaving gaps between attacks, which further cripples its damage potential. The sword makes for an excellent handicap, though, and does not fail every now and then like the Red Rust does, provided that Alucard's strength is high enough to at least cause some damage to enemies. Despite its in-game description, Tyrfing does not inflict Curse damage or status.
It has a single unique ability, however. Tyrfing has both Dark and Cut as primary attributes. In a normal elemental weapon, Dark (the element) would be the primary or dominant attribute, and Cut (the physical damage type) would be the secondary or recessive attribute. Weapons can only use one attribute at a time, and the primary attribute will be used in most situations. The secondary attribute, however, will be used if the following two conditions are met: (1) the enemy has no reaction to the primary attribute (i.e., is not weak, resistant, immune, etc.), and (2) the enemy is weak to the secondary attribute. The Dark elemental sword Mormegil has Dark as its primary attribute and Cut as its secondary attribute, so when it attacks an enemy that absorbs Dark, such as Malachi, it will use the Dark element since the enemy reacts to it, and so it will heal this enemy.
In Tyrfing's case, however, both attributes, Dark and Cut, are dominant, which means it will never use the attribute the enemy is resistant or immune to and will always use the one the enemy is weak to, if available. So, against an enemy like Malachi, it will use its Cut attribute and not its Dark element and will deal normal Cut damage to this enemy rather than healing it with its Dark element. Likewise, against an enemy immune to Cut, the Slime, it will deal Dark damage, overcoming that enemy's immunity by not using its Cut attribute.
This means an enemy must be resistant, immune, or absorb both Dark and Cut to not take full damage from the Tyrfing. The only enemies in the game that have this particular combination of immunities are the Specters in the Saturn version. Normally, most sub-weapons and attacks with two dominant attributes have elements as their attributes, but in Tyrfing's case, one of the attributes is Cut, a physical damage type, and, as such, is the only one of its kind in the game. It's also the only one of Alucard's equippable weapons that has two primary attributes and the only elemental weapon with an additional physical damage type that is not a secondary attribute.
This sword can be found during the first trip to the Castle Keep. It is located in the room above and to the right of the lion-headed elevator room. A more useful Dark sword, Mormegil, is found later in the Catacombs after Granfaloon has been defeated.

Trivia[]
- Tyrfingr, or Tirfing, is a cursed magical sword from Norse mythology, said to cut through any material as easily as cloth and to be incapable of missing a swing. King Svafrlami forced dwarf smiths to create the weapon, but in revenge they cursed it to kill a man each time it was drawn and to be the cause of three great evils, and also to have the power to slay Svafrlami himself.
