Vampires are boss characters and regular enemies in Castlevania (N64) and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness.
Description
Vampires are first encountered in the main hall of the Villa and are encountered sporadically throughout the rest of the house. Toward the end of the Villa level, two vampires are fought as the level bosses for Carrie and Reinhardt, while Cornell has his encounter with Gilles de Rais. Vampires are seen infesting the castle center as well, appearing much more frequently. Most vampires encountered could be considered lesser vampires who appear to have been regular villagers and servants before being turned. In several cases, the vampires have bat-like traits, namely in their heads (especially with their in-game renders) and arms (which resemble bat wings in some cases).
Vampires are extremely agile. They are capable of great speed and acrobatic abilities, as well as climbing on walls and ceilings. A common tactic is for a vampire to jump close to their victim and slash at them with their claws. Their special attack is the ability to grab and bite the player characters that induces the status ailment "Vamp". Other vampire abilities are summoning bats and transforming into mist.
The latter two abilities are not common and vary from vampire to vampire. Recently turned vampires seem just as capable in combat as an older one, as indicated by the recently turned vampire woman in the Villa, who seems superior to her murderer in every way. It has also been confirmed that enemy vampires have more damage resistance at night time, taking nearly twice the amount of punishment before dying. So a good strategy to think about would be using a Sun Card before fighting these nasty beings, or if you like a challenge you could use a Moon Card.
Known vampires
Specific vampire characters encountered include Master Oldrey, Rosa, Gilles de Rais, Vincent (under specific conditions), and of course, Dracula. See their respected articles for more details.
