Vampire Survivors is a 2022 roguelike shoot 'em up video game developed and published by poncle (formerly just Luca Galante). Following an early access period from December 2021, it was released for macOS, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Android, and iOS in late 2022. A port for Nintendo Switch was released on August 17, 2023, and a port for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 was released on August 29, 2024.
The player controls an automatically attacking character while fighting against continuous waves of monsters, with the goal being to survive the onslaught for as long as possible and unlock additional characters, weapons, and relics for subsequent sessions. In spite of the game's name and key art, almost none of the monsters encountered are vampires.
Vampire Survivors received accolades at the Golden Joystick Awards, New York Game Awards and D.I.C.E. Awards. The game was nominated in five categories at the British Academy Games Awards, of which it won in two: Game Design and Best Game.
The game received multiple expansions since its release, some in collaboration with other companies.
The first collaboration with Konami was the Vampire Survivors: Operation Guns DLC, released on May 9, 2024, featuring characters, weapons, enemies, music and stages themed after the Contra series.
The following DLC was also a collaboration with Konami, Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania, released on October 31, 2024, featuring characters, weapons, enemies and music, as well as Dracula's Castle as the largest stage for the game thus far, from the Castlevania series. It was expanded with update 1.14 on October 28, 2025, featuring new characters, weapons, music, and a new adventure.
Plot[]
Vampire Survivors is nominally set in rural Italy in 2021. Hordes of monsters summoned by the evil Bisconte Draculó ravage the land, and the Belpaese family and other heroic survivors take it upon themselves to hunt down and defeat Draculó. This quest takes them through monster-infested locales such as a cursed forest, a haunted library, an abandoned dairy plant, an ominous tower, and an otherworldly chapel.
It is a well-known running joke that Draculó may or may not exist, as every stage description continues to describe the Survivors' hunt for a vampire losing steam as time goes on, believing that finally, this will be the place where a vampire will be found. However, every single coffin they find just contains another Survivor. Eventually, the player encounters the final boss, The Directer.
Two original DLC packs expanding upon the series have been released. Legacy of the Moonspell is set on Mount Moonspell, which has fallen to an army of yōkai and oni, leading the Survivors there in the hopes of finding clues as to where a vampire could be found. Tides of the Foscari takes the Survivors to Lake Foscari, where they encounter students from Foscari Academy, a school focused on teaching three different houses of students: mages, warriors and tacticians, and spies. However, the students discover an abyss below the lake, where they accidentally unseal a monster that has the potential to consume the world. Further released DLC focused on crossover content.
Adventures[]
Adventures have parallel or separate stories and function as standalone games, with their own separate gold tracking, upgrade screen, and character, weapon, and passive item pools, as well as different unlock conditions for these elements. Golden Eggs are also absent, and any collected by a character are transferred to that character in the main game, nevertheless, the game offers the possibility of ascending an adventure upon completion to reset progress in exchange for stat bonuses for its characters. However, some unlockables are shared between the main game and the adventures, especially Relics, Arcanas, and Darkanas, which can prove very useful for clearing certain stages.
There are a few different Adventures in the game:
- A Garlic Paradise follows the elderly Poe Ratcho as he attempts to find the titular Garlic Paradise and retire.
- World of Light and Dark focuses on Imelda Belpaese, whose newfound life as a holy woman is uprooted when enemies from both Heaven and Hell invade her small church. She is thus tasked with finding assistance in her battle against the forces of both light and darkness.
- To End an Ice Age follows She-Moon as she attempts to rekindle the flame of life and revive frozen world.
- Legacy of the Moonspell tells the story of Miang Moonspell as she searches for help in taking down the villainous dragon Orochimario.
- Emergency Meeting is a crossover with Among Us - after Gennaro Belpaese, Pugnala Provola, and Sir Ambrojoe are transported to the mysterious planet Polus, an experiment goes awry, creating aggressive monsters and bringing in alien threats.
- Operation Guns is a Contra crossover, focusing on the Contra Force as they fight against the villainous Red Falcon group and prevent an alien invasion.
The Tides of the Foscari and the initial release of the Ode to Castlevania DLCs have no Adventures, but have their own stories told through the stages themselves. The developers stated that they wanted to tell a story in Tides of the Foscari that isn't just a rehash of the base DLC story, and that there was too much content in Ode to Castlevania for an Adventure at launch, though one was added with version 1.14 of the game.
Gameplay[]
The player selects one of multiple characters with different starting weapons and bonuses, and controls them on a typically endless stage with an auto-generated, repeating layout. (DLC stages are the exception, as they are a finite level designed by hand.) The player attacks automatically, and the goal is to survive as long as possible against constant waves of monsters that inflict damage when they come in contact with the player. Defeating monsters and exploring the stage allows the player to collect experience gems, which are used to level up; "floor chicken", which restores the player's health; and other helpful items. Each level increase provides the player the choice of three or four weapons and passive power-ups; once the player has collected six weapons and six power-ups and upgraded them all fully, any further levels they gain offer only gold coins or floor chicken. Another way to upgrade weapons and power-ups is to open chests, which are dropped by particularly powerful monsters and may contain one, three, or five random items. Most weapons have an ultimate form that can be attained by opening a silver chest after fully leveling the base weapon and meeting other specific conditions, usually involving having a specific passive weapon.
After making enough progress, players are granted access to Arcanas, passive abilities obtained at the start of a run and from purple chests dropped by enemies. These abilities can affect items on the stage, player stats, or certain weapons held by the player. The Arcanas are named after music from the Castlevania series, and many of the characters released with the Ode to Castlevania DLC have some of them as a passive bonus due to some of them being their theme music.
Sessions of Vampire Survivors have a soft time limit of 15, 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the stage chosen. At the time limit, the stage is cleared of all enemies and a final, tremendously strong enemy named The Reaper will spawn. One additional Reaper will appear every consecutive minute thereafter to ensure the player's eventual demise. If the player manages to defeat The Reaper with either the Infinite Corridor or Crimson Shroud weapons, it will drop 5 Golden Eggs and trigger the spawn of the White Hand, which is completely invulnerable, to end the run definitely.
A session that reaches or exceeds the stage's time limit is considered a successful completion and rewards bonus gold coins. Between sessions, accumulated gold coins can be spent to unlock new characters and persistent power-ups. Additionally, by completing challenges and finding Relics, the player can also unlock new stages, weapons, and characters, as well as additional game modifiers, such as an endless mode that removes the soft time limit but increases enemy stats, a hyper mode that raises player and enemy speed while decreasing the stage timer, and a limit break mode that allows players to continue to improve weapon attributes even after fully leveling them. Furthermore, players can gain golden eggs from killing certain enemies or buying them from an in-game vendor, applying permanent attribute boosts to their currently selected character.
Several of the designs for the characters, weapons and enemies in the base game resemble those from the Castlevania series, though some have been renamed, for example, the Ricochet Rock is the Runetracer, and the Holy Water is the Santa Water.

Gameplay[]
Ode to Castlevania contains a new handcrafted eponymous stage.
Pressure plates can be found across the map that summon bosses, which can be defeated to drop either new weapons (more specifically, spells) or Relics, with a special type called Gates, which unlock nearby doors, allowing players to progress further into the stage, as well as unlock their Warp Rooms. Certain boss rooms will also switch the players into a platforming style, allowing them to jump.
The final boss room can be reached by anyone, but only Richter is able to trigger the final battle. Leveling up isn't necessary for the final boss, as the battle is scripted. The weapons of each player are stolen and set to a level 1 whip and the character level is reset mid-fight (although passive items, Arcanas and Darkanas, as well as any stat boosts, are retained).
The DLC adds themed Weapon Selectors for different weapon types. As the series has many different weapons, spells, and more, the developers didn't want to limit players to just one for each character. Once all weapons of a specific type have been evolved, their corresponding Weapon Selector will be unlocked, showing up in runs occasionally and as a starting weapon for select characters. Unlocking them all will allow certain characters, like Soma Cruz, to start with a Candybox, a selector what allows the player to pick from the entire game's arsenal.
Stage[]
Ode to Castlevania is the largest non-procedural stage in the game, and similarly to most other non-procedural large stages in the game, a Relic is needed in order to draw the stage's map when accessing the menu, in this case, the Castlevania Map. If only the base game's Milky Way Map Relic is owned, the pause menu will only show the direction and location of rare pickups, weapons, passive items, characters and boss summoning pressure plates, but without drawing the map, making difficult to know the way. Also, if the Milky Way Map was not collected yet, no map will be shown, even if the Castlevania was collected.
The stage is divided into 9 biomes that determines the random enemies spawned:
The stage is further divided into areas, but that is just for visual representation, different locations share biomes, and thus enemy spawn lists. Known locations include:
After acquiring the Black Disk Relic, new areas become available and the menu map is expanded to reflect that.
- Sunken City
- Crystal Caves
- Frozen Caves
- Underground Maze
- Guest Rooms
- Catacombs
- Dining Halls
- Painting Gallery
- Chapel
- Confession Room
Specific enemies, such as Cave Trolls, Frozen Shades, Amalaric Snipers, Axe Armors, and Bloody Paintings, spawn in very specific parts of the stage and at very specific times, and some of them only after certain Relics have been obtained, as they are related to unlocking certain characters.
Characters[]
Playable characters[]
Many of the characters are unlocked in three separate chains, starting with finding Leon Belmont, often by character defeating a specific boss in the Ode to Castlevania stage or evolving a specific weapon. Once all chains are complete, they will link back into with Maria, which is needed to unlock Richter.
Hidden characters[]
Once Richter is unlocked, he is the only character that can unlock the Throne Room and confront Dracula. A cutscene parodying the dialogue of the first stage of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will play, but instead of fighting, Dracula will join the playable cast, followed by a battle with Death. Winning the battle will award the Black Disk Relic, which will reveal the hidden slots in the character select screen and allows them to be unlocked, starting with the already unlocked Dracula.
Secret characters[]
These characters are unlocked by finding the Pile of Secrets relic from Beelzebub's fight. This adds 37 new entries to the Secrets menu, with a majority being new characters. The characters' unlock conditions are told in riddles - for example, "make Death feel at home" involves finding the four Clock Tower weapons and uniting them into one, then replaying the final boss fight with Death; and "entrust the familiars' care to the gentlest soul twice" involves finding a Familiar Forge as Julia, either through leveling up or through the Candybox item, then finding the second one in the Ode to Castlevania stage.
Some characters can transform while in mid-gameplay upon fulfilling certain conditions, and killing 100,000 enemies with these characters will unlock their alternate forms, dubbed a "Megalo" form. Five of these are included in this DLC, with most
(except Cornell, whose form isn't labeled as a Megalo form) requiring the player to find the Ebony and Crimson Stones relic, which Legion drops upon its defeat.
Obtaining all the secrets, including the 19 base game ones, will unlock a final secret character slot, containing Chaos.
Version 1.14 characters[]
Version 1.14, added 16 new secret characters.
Weapons[]
The base game already has weapons that reference multiple weapons, sub-weapons, accesories and consumable items from the Castlevania series, consequently the DLC focused on the ones that weren't referenced yet. However, some characters from the DLC, mostly secondary characters like some bosses and Innocent Devils, start with some base game weapons.
Base weapons[]
Base weapons are usually starting weapons of common characters. They are often a choice when leveling up once unlocked. By fully leveling them and often also by having a specific passive item in possession (which may or may not also need to be fully leveled, depending on weapon), and them acquiring an upgrade granting chest such as a silver chest, they are evolved into another (usually stronger) weapon, which itself often cannot be upgraded except when playing with Limit Break active. Most of them can be unlocked as level up options for adventures by buying then once during each adventure in the Planar Bazaar.
Component weapons[]
Some character have component weapons as starting weapons, some of them are options when leveling up once unlocked, but they are more often stage pickups. They differ with base weapons in that, instead of evolving when fully upgraded with a passive item in possession, they are united into a single slot when the entire set is collected, freeing up slots and allowing the character to get new weapons, but often losing any further level they might have gained with Limit Break active. After fully leveling all components, they can be united by acquiring an upgrade granting chest such as a silver chest. Most of them can be unlocked as level up options for adventures by buying then once during each adventure in the Planar Bazaar.

Partially evolved weapons[]
Partially evolved weapons are evolved from a base weapon, but also have a third and final evolution. As with fully evolved weapons, they replace the base weapon when acquired, and fully leveling them and acquiring an upgrade granting chest such as a silver chest is necessary to evolve again.

Fully evolved weapons[]
Fully evolved weapons replace their base or partially evolved weapon when acquired. They usually have a single level and thus cannot gain stats through leveling unless when playing with Limit Break active, however, there are some evolved weapons that can be further leveled up after acquiring when playing normally, such as Melio Confodere, while others can continue to grow through the use of certain Arcanas or even the weapon's own mechanics.
Gift component weapons[]
Gift component weapons are fully evolved weapons necessary in the acquisition of powerful items called gifts. The components themselves usually are not replaced or removed, however Ode to Castlevania introduced a gift that free all fully evolved weapon slots, including the one from the gift component, without removing them from a character's arsenal, the Alucard Shield, however this also blocks leveling them up if playing with Level Break active. As with evolving or uniting weapons, acquiring an upgrade granting chest such as a silver chest is necessary.

Familiar and Innocent Devils can be selected through the Familiar Forge selector. Each one has their own arsenal, with leveled weapons and appropriate behavior for their use. Unlike the playable versions, they cannot level up, but are invulnerable, and multiple ones can be acquired during a play session, even copies of the same one. Despite their aggressive nature and the fact they are an option of a selector, they occupy passive item slots, and can be selected even when the slots have already been filled.

Pickups[]
Pickups do not occupy any weapon or passive item slot when obtained. They usually produce instantaneous effects upon collection, however, some pickups grant permanent upgrades to characters, either due to a character’s special abilities or through the use of Arcanas and Darkanas.
As with the Operation Guns DLC, Ode to Castlevania pickups spawn for any characters playing in the Ode to Castlevania stage, or in any game where at least one player is using a Castlevania character.
Enemies[]
As the names of some enemies were already used in the base game, the letters "OG" were added as a prefix.

Music[]
Most characters have theme music that overrides the default track of any stage, even when Inverse Mode is activated. As with any other stage in the game, Ode to Castlevania map features a different track for both normal and inverted modes. Additionally, music selection becomes available if the appropriate Relic from the base game is collected, allowing the player to choose from other Castlevania tracks not otherwise playable, as well as music from the base game or other non-associated DLCs.
Ode to Castlevania was released with 91 pieces of music related to the Castlevania franchise, with 36 new arrangements organized in an album titled "Ode to Castlevania", and 55 classic pieces ripped from previous Castlevania games, compiled in an album named "Castlevania Series". Some pieces are available on both albums, while others have multiple versions in the latter album. In both cases, each version is counted as a separate track.
The arrangements were created by four artists:
- 7 tracks by Daniele Zandara.
- 7 tracks by Filippo Vicarelli.
- 10 tracks by Keygen Church.
- 12 tracks by Evelyn Lark.
The arranged tracks were released on Poncle's official YouTube channel a few days before the DLC, between October 21 and 22, 2024.
Between October 24 and 27, 2025, 12 new tracks were released for the soundtrack, 3 from each of the arrangers. These additional tracks were added to the DLC with update 1.14 on October 28, 2025.
- "Original" means the track is directly ripped from a previous Castlevania game. "Arrangement" means the track was specifically arranged for Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania.

Adventure[]
Update 1.14 added an adventure for the Ode to Castlevania DLC. Finishing the adventure unlocks the Dark Lord Soma Cruz skin for both the main game and the adventure, which grants enormous stat boosts to Soma.
Stages in the adventure are simpler than the Ode to Castlevania stage, as they aren't divided into biomes or areas and don't have as much content within a single stage. They follow a more traditional approach of other adventures and of the base game stages, often looping indefinitely, horizontally, vertically, or both, with the stages that don't loop being significantly smaller, and with bosses spawning at specific times instead of mostly spawning by stepping onto pressure plates. Additionally, as with all other adventures, the Planar Bazaar Shop is available to unlock weapons and passive items from other adventures.
Like with other adventures, it functions as a standalone game, with its own separate gold tracking, upgrade screen, and character, weapon, and passive item pools, as well as different unlock conditions for these elements. Additionally, as with other adventures, Golden Eggs are absent, and any collected by a character are transferred to that character in the main game, nevertheless, the game offers the possibility of ascending the adventure upon completion to reset progress in exchange for stat bonuses for its characters. However, some unlockables are shared between the main game and the adventures, especially Relics, Arcanas, and Darkanas, which can prove very useful for clearing certain stages.

Trivia[]
- Vampire Survivors was originally created as an homage to the Castlevania series, and so many nods are present, from the various weapons being references to famous Castlevania sub-weapons, to various characters like the Belpaeses (who are based on the Belmonts).
- Simondo Belmont, a secret miniboss from Contra: Hard Corps that references Castlevania, particularly the Belmonts from the classic games, was released in the Contra themed DLC, Operation Guns.
- The Ode to Castlevania trailer uses the "Everyone is here" phrase, popularized by the second Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer. The original DLC released with version 1.12 of the game features nearly every playable character from across the entire game series, excluding those originating from mobile-only titles (Order of Shadows), fighting games (Judgment), unreleased games (The Bloodletting, Resurrection and Moonlight Rhapsody), and the Lords of Shadow universe. As it is based mostly on the games, content from other media such as manga, comics, novels, radio dramas, movies and animated series (Captain N: The Game Master and both Netflix adaptations) are also excluded.
- Some enemies that share names with those added in previous updates, before the collaboration, had the letters "OG" added as prefixes to differentiate them. Likewise, some playable characters that are based on enemies have their names spelled differently on the select screen.
- The playable Frozen Shade is named "Fronzenshade".
- The playable Amalaric Sniper is named "Alamaric Sniper".
- The Ghost had a prefix added (OG Ghost) and has a playable version named "Alleged Ghost".
- Dmitrii Blinov had his name misspelled as "Dmitri" at release. This was corrected at a later patch.
- Pumpkin is an option for the Innocent Devil, being both playable and a possible support ally.
- Some bosses, both recurring and one-time enemies, as well as important supporting characters (including those who have never demonstrated combat potential) from the main timeline are playable for the first time. In contrast, games that have been removed from the canon (Legends).
- Before the expansion of the DLC with version 1.14, alternate continuities (64 and Circle of the Moon) were represented only by their playable characters. The update, introduced, among other characters, Hugh and Morris Baldwin from Circle of the Moon, as well as Actrise from 64
- Hammer was considered for a playable character in Dawn of Sorrow and in a DLC for Harmony of Despair, but never made the cut, being technically playable for the first time.
- Lisa is playable for the first time, however the game attributes her name as "Lisa Tepes", just like in the Netflix animated series, as neither her maiden or married names have been established in the main timeline.
- This contrasts with Henry Oldrey, who is referred only by his first name despite having a known last name.
- Quincy Morris technically makes his debut in this game, with a secret unlockable referring to him as "the Morris whose tale is yet untold." His appearance is based on Billy Campbell's portrayal in the 1992 Gothic horror film Bram Stoker's Dracula.
- Quincy's inclusion and Lisa's name are the only elements not sourced from the games.
- The Fake Trio (Grant, Sypha and Trevor) use modified sprites from three base game characters, (Antonio, Imelda and Gennaro Belpaese), implying that they are actually cosplaying as Grant, Sypha and Trevor, hence being "fake". The joke further ties in with Vampire Survivors originally being a homage to the Castlevania series.
- Some enemies that share names with those added in previous updates, before the collaboration, had the letters "OG" added as prefixes to differentiate them. Likewise, some playable characters that are based on enemies have their names spelled differently on the select screen.
- Jonathan and Charlotte's paired-up descriptions are references to a YouTube video of gameplay footage switching between the two quickly.
- Likewise, Death's description is also a reference - specifically, to the base game character Mask of the Red Death, whose description is "A blasphemous mockery."
- The portraits from Portrait of Ruin, as well as various Castlevania posters and artwork inside large painting frames, make an appearance as decorations through the stage. They usually signal that the area can spawn the Bloody Painting enemy, necessary for unlocking Brauner.
- The Black Disk relic references the PlayStation CD of Symphony of the Night; once acquired, it plays the original audio of Alucard warning that the CD-ROM has computer data on cut number one and shouldn't be played, and follows by playing the associated Bonus track of the disk.
