Vorpal is a word coined by Lewis Carroll for the poem "Jabberwocky", used first in the line "He took his vorpal sword in hand" and "One, two! One, two! And through and through / The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! / He left it dead, and with its head / He went galumphing back." It is commonly assumed to mean "deadly" or "extremely sharp" (or "capable of beheading", since the hero brings the dead Jabberwock's head home in triumph), and has been used this way in a number of role-playing games and similar work.
Vorpal Blade in CastlevaniaEdit
The Vorpal Blade only makes an appearance in the English version of Symphony of the Night and in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. The original Japanese name for the blade was Sonic Blade, but so far no other swords called by this name appear in later games either.
Appearance in Symphony of the NightEdit
This blade is called a "Sonic Blade" in the Japanese version of the game. Although "Vorpal Blade" is an excellent name for a sword, the original name is more fitting for this particular sword. A "Vorpal Blade" implies that it is very powerful and able to completely slice any enemy with a single blow, perhaps overcoming any resistance to any types of attacks. This is not this blade's characteristics however. This sword is moderately strong, but its emphasis is on speed and the ease at which it is swung. It does "slice cleanly" through enemies though, so "Vorpal Blade" is still appropriate.
The "sonic assisted" characteristic of the sword allow it to be swung many times more often than a normal blade is able to and allows the user to swing it with practically no effort at all. Thus, this blade can be swung as fast as the attack buttons can be pressed and do this while its wielder is walking. The swing pattern of the sword is different than other weapons of the class "Sword". Instead of repeating a broad swing in front of the chest, the slice pattern is an up-and-down slice in front which can be repeated over and over again.
This rare sword can only be found as a drop item from an Archer found in the Anti-Chapel. An even more effective sword can be found as a drop item from a Schmoo in the Forbidden Library. This is the Crissaegrim (aka Valmanway), which is swung four times per button press and is assisted by the wind rather than sound waves and generally considered the most powerful sword in the game.
