The Yeti is an enemy in the Castlevania series. The notorious abominable snowman is a mysterious, cowardly legend said to live in snowy mountains.

Origins[]

Bigfoot - 01

Frame 352 of the Patterson–Gimlin film (1967).

The Yeti, or "Abominable Snowman", is an ape-like cryptid taller than an average human that is said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet. The names Yeti and Meh-Teh are commonly used by the people indigenous to the region, and are part of their history and mythology. Stories of the Yeti first emerged as a facet of Western popular culture in the 19th century.

The scientific community generally regards the Yeti as a legend, given the lack of conclusive evidence, although it remains as one of the most famous creatures of cryptozoology.

However, the Yeti in the Castlevania series actually resembles Bigfoot (also known as Sasquatch) rather than the Yeti itself (Bigfoot has shorter and dark fur and is known to live in forests, while the Yeti is generally perceived as having long and white body hair and lives in the snowy mountains of the Himalayas) and its design is based on the supposed ape-like humanoid that appears in the Patterson–Gimlin film shot in Bluff Creek, California in 1967. Its idle animation sprite in particular is an almost identical replica (with subtle differences) of the famous frame 352 of said film.

Appearances[]

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]

The Yeti is one of three cryptid-based hidden monsters in Dawn of Sorrow (the others being the Flying Humanoid and Mothman). He is a cowardly, ape-like creature who usually runs away if spotted by the player.

He can be seen hiding in the very first screen of the game, right outside the Lost Village, and after the intro sequence. He lurks in the snow-covered background, not paying much attention to the player and wandering away after a while.

To coax the Yeti out from the background, Soma Cruz needs to have the Waiter Skeleton's soul, Delicious Curry, and toss out a large heaping plate of Curry out in front of the Yeti. The Yeti will then display an exclamation mark (!) over his head and jump out from the background to snack on the tossed dish. The Yeti will flee into the background again if he sees Soma, takes damage (including from the Curry itself), or if the Curry disappears from waiting too long; this gives Soma a small window of opportunity to kill him and hopefully get his soul. The Yeti's soul has a rather high drop rate and it will usually spawn after just a few tries.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness[]

Main article: Iytei

Going by the name of Iytei in Curse of Darkness, the Yeti makes a cameo appearance in the form of a Battle-Type Innocent Devil. It is a somewhat secret creature, and in order to obtain it, the player needs to feed Special (white) Evo Crystals to a Golem.

Its signature ability is the Shoulder Ride, which is required to destroy a group of statues in a bowling-like event in the Forest of Jigramunt to open a secret path.

It's worth noting that Iytei more closely resembles the actual Yeti (having long, white fur), unlike other incarnations that are instead based on Bigfoot (or Sasquatch, having shorter and dark fur).

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia[]

The Yeti must be photographed with the Camera in order to complete Marcel's third and final quest, "Case of the Hideous Snowman". The monster reuses his sprite from Dawn of Sorrow (although this time he's neither initially found pacing in the background nor is it necessary to lure him out) and only appears in one room in the entire game.

He can be found in the Tymeo Mountains, in the middle of the long vertical room located at the center of the map, slowly pacing on one of the wooden bridges. This section can only be reached from above on the left, or from below on the right. If the player approaches him, he'll quickly detect them and jump into the background. As such, it's required to kill him quickly, or, if the player is looking to complete Marcel's quest, find a way to get near him and snatch a Photo before he escapes.

If coming from above, it's best to enter the room from the top right, as he always faces the direction where player entered the room, so from the player may drop behind him to catch him by surprise and either snatch a photo or slay him before he notices them. Using the Rapidus Fio glyph almost trivializes these tasks, as the player can take advantage of their enhanced speed to quickly get near to him. He isn't very resilient and can usually be defeated with a single powerful attack.

Trivia[]

  • When the Yeti detects the player, it will display an exclamation mark (!) above its head (a trait it shares with Rare Ghost, O and the Mimic); this may be a reference to the Metal Gear series (also by Konami), where enemies generally also display an exclamation sign when they detect the player, and which is a classic staple of the franchise.
